Weirdcore
What is it?
Weirdcore is a surrealist, lo-fi digital aesthetic focused on conveying feelings of confusion, disorientation, alienation, and nostalgia. While it shares considerable visual DNA with Dreamcore and Liminal Spaces, Weirdcore specifically leans aggressively into the disturbing, the jagged, and the hostile.
Visually, it exclusively relies on amateur digital photography from the late 90s to mid-2000s, which is then heavily manipulated. The edits deliberately replicate the feeling of a corrupted file from Windows 98 that holds an unknown intent. The imagery heavily features poorly compressed JPEGs, unprompted MS Paint text in bright basic colors, and the aggressive censorship of faces (often replaced with giant, floating eyes).
History & Origins
Primitive Stages & Tumblr (2017–2019)
While similar editing styles existed much earlier, the exact term "Weirdcore" is believed to have been coined around 2017 by the user David on Twitter. It began purely as a niche visual movement on Tumblr, growing directly out of the burgeoning Liminal Space photography trend. However, instead of just observing liminal spaces, artists began actively modifying the empty spaces with Microsoft clipart and jagged text to heighten anxiety.
Mainstream Adoption & TikTok (2020–present)
Weirdcore experienced a massive surge in mainstream popularity in 2020 through TikTok and YouTube. It expanded far beyond simple images, becoming a sprawling, ARG-like subculture where images frequently ask direct, unsettling questions to the viewer. Musically, it became heavily tied to artists like Jack Stauber and the track "Libet's Delay" by The Caretaker. The aesthetic often serves as a critique or mirror of the over-stimulation and confusing nature of the early internet.
The look: a field guide
Jagged & Hostile Editing
Unlike polished modern surrealism, Weirdcore editing is intentionally bad. Subjects are cut out with un-smoothed, jagged edges and harsh MS Paint borders. Shadows are non-existent or logically impossible.
Censorship & The Observer
Human subjects, if present, always have their faces scribbled out in red MS Paint, replaced with floating realistic eyes, or covered by massive black censor bars. The feeling of "being watched" is paramount.
Hostile Text Typography
Bright red or yellow basic fonts (Arial, MS Sans Serif, Times New Roman) asking disturbing questions: "Who is behind you?", "You can't leave", or "Are you lost?"
Total JPEG Destruction
Extreme low-fidelity artifacting. The images look as though they have been saved, compressed, and re-uploaded hundreds of times over two decades, resulting in deep-fried pixelation.
