The aesthetic traces its roots back to early internet forums documenting "The Backrooms," specifically the "Poolrooms" (Level 37). It emerged as a distinct genre in the late 2010s as artists began experimenting with CGI to create impossible, surreal aquatic architecture that felt too clean to be real.
Viral Serenity (2020–present)
Poolcore exploded in popularity on TikTok and Instagram through the work of 3D artists like Jared Pike. His renders of tiled hallways leading into deep, glowing water defined the modern "look" of the aesthetic, shifting it from a niche horror subgenre into a mainstream visual movement associated with relaxation and "weirdcore" beauty.
